How we work
How the RealUptime team makes decisions, talks, spends its time, gets paid and treats each other.
Small on purpose
RealUptime runs four live products, Status, Monitor, Errors and Outages, with a team we intend to keep under ten people. We measure ourselves by what each person makes possible, not by headcount.
How decisions get made
Everyone is heard. When the person who knows an area says an idea is bad and explains why, that view is followed in most cases. Disagreement is expected and is best made in writing, with the reasons.
Each lead owns their area: engineering decides what gets built and when it ships, sales sets prices and trials, marketing decides what we publish. Final calls on company direction and money stay with the founder.
How we talk
The team chat is the office. We write things down, keep meetings rare and short, and only ask for a few overlapping hours a day, so people in different time zones can do their best work.
Time and rest
Before salaries start, most roles can be part-time on your own schedule. Once salaries start, the plan is a 32-hour, four-day week and unlimited time off with a minimum everyone has to take.
We run products people rely on when things break, so real incidents still happen, and the CTO owns them.
Pay and ownership
The founding team owns part of the company. Once revenue allows, a salary pool funded by revenue grows until everyone is paid at the top of their local market. Units share in the company's profits and in the proceeds of any sale.
How we treat people
We hire slowly so that we never have to lay anyone off. Treating colleagues or customers with contempt, harassment or discrimination ends a working relationship straight away.
We consider every applicant and colleague on the merits, without regard to any status protected by law, and we make accommodations for anyone who needs them.
Tools
Engineers get unlimited AI coding tools as a normal part of the job. Everyone else gets access and help using them, with no mandate.
